  • Choose a strategic name for your project.

  • Register your domain name and purchase your hosting step by step with Hostinger.

Your project starts here

Welcome to the first step in creating your website with WordPress: registering a domain name and purchasing web hosting.

This is where the real construction of your digital project begins. Without these two elements, your website cannot exist on the internet.

The process is simple, documented step by step and requires no previous technical knowledge. By the end of this step, you will have all the infrastructure you need to install WordPress and start building your website.

What do I need to create a website?

Domain name

Your address on the internet. It is what allows people to find your website.

Web hosting

The space where your website’s files are stored.

Both are essential. Without a domain name or hosting, your website cannot function. The hosting provider we use and the other services we recommend are presented in the tools for starting an online business.

What is a domain name?

Definition

A domain name is the unique address that identifies your website on the internet.

Instead of memorising a series of numbers (the IP address), users enter an address that is easy to remember, such as: www.scaleandown.com

Thanks to the domain name, people can find your project, share it and easily return to it.

Every domain name has two main parts:

  • Second-level domain (SLD): Scale & Own
  • Top-level domain (TLD): .com

How do you choose a suitable domain name?

Choosing a good domain name is not simply a matter of registering a web address: it is one of the first things users will associate with your project and what they will use to find, remember and share it.

For it to work in the long term, it should be easy to write and pronounce, reflect your brand identity or, when it makes sense, contain a word related to your activity.

Keep it short and simple: a short domain name is easier to remember, write and communicate. Avoid long combinations, unnecessary numbers or words that are difficult to pronounce.

Reflect your project’s identity: choose a name that represents your brand and is easy to distinguish from other websites.

Choose the right extension: favour “.com” if you are targeting an international audience, or the TLD for your audience’s country for a more local approach (.co.uk, .ca, .au, .nz).

Avoid legal problems: do not use registered trademarks or names that are too close to existing projects. This could cause legal disputes in the future.

What is web hosting?

Definition

Web hosting is space on servers where the files, images and other resources a website needs are stored so that it can be accessed on the internet.

Hosting providers also usually offer an administration panel that allows you to manage the hosting account. From this panel, you can install WordPress, create email accounts, configure certain aspects of security and manage different tools related to your website.

It is important to clarify that a domain name and web hosting work together. You can register a domain name, but if you do not purchase hosting, no content will be displayed when someone visits it.

The domain name will exist, but no page will be visible when you access it because no files or content will be hosted on a server.

How do you choose reliable WordPress hosting?

Once you have defined your domain name, the next step is to choose web hosting. Here are some of the most important criteria to consider when purchasing hosting.

Performance and uptime

These ensure that your website remains accessible to visitors. Uptime above 99.9% reduces interruptions and possible traffic losses.

Loading speed

This directly affects the user experience. A fast website makes navigation easier and can contribute positively to its search visibility.

Plans and resources

The processor, memory, storage space and bandwidth determine the hosting account’s ability to handle visitors and maintain good performance.

Pricing and renewals

An attractive introductory price may increase considerably upon renewal. Knowing both amounts will help you avoid unpleasant surprises.

Support

When a technical problem occurs, having fast, competent support can make all the difference.

Server location

The closer the servers are to your target audience, the lower the latency and the faster the loading speed.

Reviews and reputation

The experiences of other users can help you assess a provider’s quality and reliability.

⭐ Which hosting provider do we use at Scale & Own?

After testing different providers across several digital projects, our current preference is Hostinger.

We chose it for several reasons:

  • Ease of use
  • Good value for money
  • Good performance
  • Intuitive administration panel (hPanel)
  • Tools and features based on artificial intelligence

For these reasons, we consider it a particularly worthwhile option for people who are just getting started. It will also be the provider used throughout this tutorial, so that you can follow each step more easily.

Connecting your domain name and web hosting

It is essential that your domain name and web hosting are connected correctly so that your website works and you can manage everything in one place.

You will now discover the two most common ways to purchase them.

Purchase together

You can purchase your domain name and web hosting from the same provider.

This option generally simplifies the initial setup and, in many cases, includes the domain name free for the first year when you purchase an annual hosting plan.

Purchase separately

This method involves registering the domain name with one provider (GoDaddy, for example) and purchasing web hosting from another (Hostinger, for example).

This option gives you more freedom to compare the prices and features of each service, although the setup usually requires a few extra steps.

Note

If you are new to creating a website, we suggest purchasing your domain name and web hosting together from the same provider.

How to buy your domain name and web hosting from Hostinger

You will now see the step-by-step process for registering your domain name and purchasing your web hosting from Hostinger.

By following this order, you will avoid the most common errors and have everything ready to continue with the WordPress installation.

01

Create your Hostinger account

To begin, you need to create your account:

  • Visit the official website: www.hostinger.com
  • Click My Account (in the top right).
  • Select Sign Up and create your account with your email address or Google.
  • Once registered, you will access the main panel called hPanel, where you can manage all your services.

02

Choose your hosting plan

Before registering your domain name, you need to purchase a hosting plan that is compatible with this AI website creation journey. You need a plan that includes SSH access.

SSH access is a direct, secure connection to the server where your website files are stored. It allows you to work on those files without going through the browser or the hosting provider’s panel. In step 8 of the Scale & Own journey, you will learn how AI connects through it to build your website.

To do this:

  • In the left-hand menu, click Websites.
  • Select a hosting plan.

Free domain names are generally included with annual plans, but not monthly subscriptions. Purchasing at least one year of service is therefore less expensive and simplifies the project’s initial management.

At Scale & Own, we use the Business Web Hosting plan: it allows you to host several websites and offers a good balance between price, performance and features. If you plan to diversify your income sources or develop several projects in the future, it can be a good option.

Whichever plan you choose, remember that it must include SSH access.

To verify this, open the plans page, scroll to the bottom and click Compare Plans. In the Technical Details section, you will see whether each plan includes SSH access. This allows you to make sure that the plan you purchase is suitable for this journey.

  • Select your preferred billing period.
  • Choose your payment method.
  • Enter your payment details and click Complete Purchase.

03

Search for and register your domain name

Once your payment has been confirmed, open your hPanel to register your domain name:

  • In hPanel, find the “Claim your free domain” option.
  • Enter the name you want (for example: mybrand.com).
  • Click Check Availability.

If the domain name is available, it will appear in green and you can click Claim Domain to register it.

If it is not available, you will need to try another option until you find an available name.

At this point, you have completed the essentials: your domain name is registered, your web hosting is active and your infrastructure is ready.

You have built the foundation of your digital asset

As you have seen, this is a simple process that allows you to move forward confidently as you create your project.

Without this technical foundation, it would be impossible to install WordPress or start developing your online presence.

In the next step, you will learn how to install WordPress on your hosting account with a few clicks and take your first steps in the administration dashboard.

Continue to the next step and get your website up and running.
